What is DBU pricing?
DBU pricing is the per-unit rate Databricks charges for each DBU consumed. Rates vary by compute type, pricing tier, and cloud: on AWS Premium list prices (June 2026), jobs compute runs about $0.15 per DBU, all-purpose compute $0.55, and SQL Serverless $0.70. The same work can cost 3–4× more purely by compute type.
Three factors set the rate: the compute type (jobs, all-purpose, SQL Classic/Pro/Serverless, serverless jobs), the pricing tier of your Databricks plan, and the cloud and region. Classic compute bills DBUs on top of your own cloud infrastructure cost; serverless SKUs fold the infrastructure into a higher DBU rate.
The spread between SKUs is where budgets drift. A scheduled pipeline that runs on an all-purpose cluster instead of jobs compute pays roughly 3–4× the DBU rate for identical work. It’s one of the most common findings in Databricks cost reviews, invisible unless you’re looking at rates rather than totals.
Rates also shift as Databricks renames and repackages SKUs (Workflows became Lakeflow Jobs; Delta Live Tables became Lakeflow Declarative Pipelines), so cost data often carries both old and new SKU names for the same thing. Verify against the current Databricks price list before modeling.
